Following a fun family night featuring workshops by Mad Science on March 14, 2008, this year’s PTA Science Fair has been considered a big success. Over 65 students participated, some individually, and some with partners, resulting in a variety of creative and interesting projects that were displayed during Open House on March 20, 2008.
The fourth and fifth grade projects were judged by a panel of “science minded” volunteers, including a Muir Middle School science teacher, a high school science teacher, and a doctor. Points were given based on how clearly the students described their question, hypothesis, methods, results and conclusion. Additional points were awarded to projects that were original and demonstrated a clear understanding by the student of the scientific process. The award recipients are listed below with their abbreviated project titles. Each award recipient will receive a certificate and a ribbon of recognition for his/her achievement during the April monthly assemblies. Everyone who entered a project in the Science Fair will be awarded a certificate of participation and will receive a meal certificate from a local restaurant.
Fourth Grade:
1st: Nicole Bieker – How can I make my Christmas tree last longer?
2nd: Ryan Raad – Can I use a solar oven to make cookies?
3rd: Sofia Hildago – Do all brands of paper towels absorb water the same?
HM: Christian Shahnazarian and Gabriel Roses – Which battery lasts longest?
Fifth Grade:
1st tie Hannah Dragomer and Emily Lambert – Does home made or store bought stain remover work better to remove stains?
Alexa Schnaid – Do your hands get dirtier playing tennis or basketball?
2nd: Kurt Kenehan – How can I make a paper bridge?
3rd tie Emily Cavaluzzi and Paige Gallagher – Which plant grows better in
different types of water?

regular water?
HM: Madison Heath – Does smell affect taste?
Heartfelt thanks to Cheri Simmons for taking the lead in organizing the Science Fair, planning the family science night, and for ensuring that all of the participants received specific feedback about their projects, making this a true learning experience. As always, we are extremely grateful to our panel of volunteer judges, including Heidi Sasaki, Kurt Ballash and Dr. Beth Marcus.
