For 2008-09, the Governor proposes that the Legislature suspend Proposition 98 (the minimum funding guarantee for schools) and cut $4.4 billion (more than 9%) in education funds. $400 million to 1.4 billion in education funding reductions in the current 2007-08 budget year are being discussed NOW, which may require midyear program shutdowns.
California PTA urges legislators not to cut Proposition 98, the minimum public education funding guarantee for our students. The impact of the cuts proposed in the Governor’s budget would severely harm each and every school. These are the largest cuts ever proposed. Schools have no fat to cut. More than 90% of the school budget is committed to salaries, most of which have already been committed. Cuts this large mean loss of staff, enrichment programs, and as a result larger class sizes.
As a parent, I urge you: please email, write, fax or call your legislator to request preservation of school services and Prop 98. Parents have clout, but only if they speak up! Let the legislator know your home address so they know you are in his district.
